Holiday apartments, holiday villas and holiday homes in Croatia

The east and west, central and southern Europe converge at Croatia. Since the horrific war that tore the country ended in 1995, this young nation has had a new lease of life and is once more a -paradise for sailing and summer holidays. With the exception of the cities of Dubrovnik, Zadar and Sibenek, the -coastal regions of Istra, and the bays of Kvarner and Dalmacija, have been less affected by the war than the hinterland. Today, Croatia is the youngest European nation, ambitious, confident and full of life.

Eating and Drinking

Typical Croatian dishes are sometimes ”heavy”, as they are prepared with lots of oil and fat. The meat and grill specialities such as Cevapcici, Raznijici and Pleskavica are popular dishes and are very tasty. On the coast, fish and seafood dishes can, of course, be found on the menu. The main courses are generally served with rice, potatoes or chips, and in Istra, influenced by Italian cuisine, meals are served with gnocchi, noodles or polenta. Local wines are usually chosen to accompany meals. Many varieties of grapes ripen under the Croatian sun, some of which are known through-out Europe. There has been a surge in the number of vineyards producing quality wines following privatisation.

Travelling by Car

There are few motorways in the country. However, many main roads are presently under construction or have been planned. The most well known road is the coastal route between Rijeka and Karlobag, which was rebuilt in 1997. The speed limit is 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h on main roads, 100 km/h on fast lanes and 130 km/h on motorways. Seat belts are obligatory. The alcohol limit is 0.5 pro mille.
